We really loved the sermons at Riverview, but recently learned that they do not believe in allowing women to hold leadership roles in their church, so we have chosen to no longer attend. This is a very large church, and it's easy to go on Sundays for long periods of time and not meet anyone at all. My kids never made relationships there because they didn't see the same families from week to week. Also, they charge over $100/child for their Vacation Bible School, so my kids could not attend unless we requested a scholarship, which we did not feel comfortable doing. We attended a parenting class at the church and my wife left a question for the minister (they provided worksheets), and he never answered it or contacted us about the question. Also, the music is so loud, I truly believe it is a risk to the hearing of the babies people take into the sanctuary/auditorium. When we commented on the noise levels, we were offered ear plugs!!! My son has a hearing loss, so that was a very frustrating response to me. During the month of December, they usually played only one or two Christmas songs, which was super disappointing. My wife had a friend who was working in nursery care there and when she left to join another church, nobody even asked her why.
Riverview is great! We have been attending Riv for almost 2 years now and love it! We have been to both the Holt and Westside Venues, and both are great! If you are looking for a church that is culturally fluid, but holds fast to core Christian beliefs, Riv is the place for you! They do an amazing job of explaining The Gospel within it's original context, while helping us understand how to directly apply scripture to our life in today's culture without abandoning the original meaning.
Loved the sermon about community. The N.T. mentions it often & James Grainger's teaching on this topic had verses from throughout the Bible. Inspiring worship. Kids liked Riv kids a lot.
Riverview is a great environment to hear the Gospel. They have a wonderful group of pastors that provide great, informative, and inspiration sermons. The atmosphere is very relaxed and dress is casual. They have a good variety of bands that play, but the music is high quality. The kids ministry is excellent, and my daughter has been going there since she was a baby. They have a hallway that displays pieces by local artists. I hear the coffee is good, though I don't drink coffee - I'll take my wife's word for it.
The sermons are always inspiring and convicting; I always feel that I'm hearing God speak directly to me when I'm there. The people are very welcoming. And the music is awesome!
